HASTINGS  BONFIRE  AND  FIREWORKS                      17  October

Autumn bonfire celebrations are a Sussex tradition, occurring in many towns and villages. In Hastings we hold ours earlier than most so as to occur on the nearest Saturday to "Hastings Day" on 14th October, the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066.  The torchlight procession, which includes guests from other Sussex bonfire societies, sets off from Claremont at 7.15 pm and proceeds along the sea front and round the Old Town, before returning to Pelham Crescent. Then at 9 pm the bonfire on the beach is lit and a few minutes later the fireworks display begins.  

PLANET  ISRAEL   20 October   7 pm

At the Stade Hall in Hastings old town, a screening of the documentary film made by Gillian Mosely which examines what is happening in Israel, and how Israeli society came to the point where the actions of its government and armed forces in the West Bank and Gaza came to be seen as acceptable. The film lasts for 110 minutes and will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and questions to the director. Refreshments will be provided. WHAT'S  UP  WITH  THE UNITED  NATIONS ?            24 October  1.30 pm to 5 pm

This is the provocative title of a seminar organised by the Bexhill and Hastings branch of the United Nations Association, examining why war threatens to eclipse peace in the world.. It takes place at  St Peter's Community Centre in Church Street, Bexhill  TN40 2HE and will be addressed by Professor Richard Sakwa.
